Club Handicap Competition

The annual handicap competition is currently programmed to run from around mid May to early September with a series of events taking place on a weekday evening at venues around the Derby and South Derbyshire area. There are 4-mile and 2-mile categories to choose from and these are run simultaneously at each event. They are open to all club Members.

The object of a handicap competition is to adjust the timings of individual runners according to known ability in order to give all participants a roughly equal chance of winning. As a result the overall competition often has beginners or improvers finishing in the top three, provided of course that they have taken part in enough events during the season to amass sufficient points! First time runners are asked to provide an estimated time which is adjusted after the first event. Sometimes all runners are sent off together, usually the first event, or are staggered with the fastest going off last and slowest first, making for an interesting finish!

The courses are designed to provide a pleasant and interesting run, away from busy roads, without being over-demanding in terms of terrain and surface. The toughest and perhaps most scenic run is the Ingleby event which was introduced in 2008.

We are still confirming the locations of some 2010 races, but the dates are:

Friday 14th May
Wednesday 9th June
Tuesday 29th June
Sunday 4th July
Tuesday 13th July
